There is something inherently magical and mysterious about autumn. Summer’s lively sun-drenched days have given way to quiet, cool solitude. The plants that flourished in warm weather have gone dormant. Big green trees now stand nearly bare. Wild animals scurry about, collecting what they can before they retreat for the winter.
And there’s a change in us as we move indoors and start preparing for the long dark ahead. Autumn is harvest time. It’s a time to reap what we’ve sown. It’s a time of reflection and transition. In the life cycle of the year, this season is death but it is a death that must occur in order to make room for new life.
It’s no wonder so many ancient cultures chose this season as a time to honor loved ones who have passed on from this life. Halloween has become synonymous with costumes and candy but it started out as Samhain, the Ancient Celtic festival honoring the dead. Autumn festivals in honor of the dead existed in ancient Persia, Rome, Peru, Europe and beyond. In Mexico, the Day of the Dead is still an important celebration dedicated those we've loved and lost.
But Autumn celebrations are not simply symbolic. Many believe there are certain times, dates and locations during which the ethereal divide between the physical world and the spiritual world is thin. The dead are honored from late October to early November because there is a belief across cultures that the veil between the living and the dead is at its thinnest during this time.
As this energetic barrier weakens, spiritual beings can cross over into this realm and our chances of contacting the beyond are increased. For psychics or anyone with extrasensory abilities, the weeks leading up to Halloween can be tumultuous and even frightening. Skilled psychics know how to harness the increase in energy yet some people may not even be aware of the effect the thinning veil has on them. Are you feeling super emotional lately? Are you having strange dreams? Do you find yourself waking up between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m.? These are all signs that the veil is thinning and you may be sensitive to it.
If the thinning veil is stressing you out, here’s what you can do:
CARRY THE RIGHT CRYSTALS: Choose stones that will keep you grounded. Onyx and Smoky Quartz will ease the distractions around you while Black Tourmaline and Obsidian will help you stay positive.
CLEAN YOUR SPACE: You can take this one literally and clean your home—it’ll encourage a clear mind—or clean out the bad energy by smudging with white sage or burning lavender and sage oils. Open the windows so the negative vibes can escape.
LET IT GO: This one also has two meanings. De-clutter and remove the stuff you don’t need from your life or write down a list of whatever you want to release—bad habits, toxic people, negative influences, etc.—and burn it (carefully).
HONOR YOUR LOVED ONES: How can you pay homage to those you’ve loved that have passed on to the next life? Look at photos or mementos. Spend time with mutual friends or family. Cook a special meal. Do whatever feels right to honor their memory and what they meant to you.
GET A PSYCHIC READING: When the veil is thin, there is no better time to connect with the spiritual realm. If you want to make contact with those who have crossed over or your spirit guide, get a psychic reading. Right now, most psychics are experiencing heightened abilities so take advantage of this powerful time.
