We tend to put a lot of stock in the notion of New Year’s resolutions but there’s more to ringing in the new year than making a list of things we want to change about ourselves.
A new year presents a fresh start full of brand new possibilities. No matter what the past year has brought, it’s a time to shed the pain, look back on the good, and prepare to move forward.
Here’s how you can embrace a 2018 that’s good for the soul:
REFLECT
Time seems to pass in a flash. The days, weeks and months fly by so quickly that we may fail to really take in what’s happening around us. As a new year approaches, we’re reminded to pause and reflect on the year that’s coming to an end.
It’s a chance to revel in success and happy memories, think about the lessons we’ve learned and the wisdom gained, and check any completed goals off our lists. It’s also an opportunity to practice gratitude. Before we envision the year ahead and what it may bring, take some time to think about the things you’re thankful to have right now.
Of course, not all reflection is warm and fuzzy. It’s important to look back on the darker moments in the past year, and at the things that didn’t go so well. How did you make it through the tough times? What would you do differently next time? Don’t dwell on what went wrong, but consider what those moments taught you and how those lessons may be helpful in the coming year.
LET GO
To truly embrace a brand new year, we must let go of the baggage and negativity we’ve been carrying around, both physically and spiritually.
Physically, it means purging stuff you don’t need or doesn’t bring you joy. Organize and clear out clutter. Donate clothes that just take up space. Throw away the keepsakes from ex’s that broke your heart. Sometimes it even means distancing yourself from toxic people in your life.
Spiritually, it’s a little more work. Letting go can mean releasing blame, worries, insecurities and regrets. It can mean forgiving yourself or someone else. It can mean letting go of control and realizing that you’re doing your best and that’s enough.
Letting go is no easy task, but it allows you to clear your energies and open yourself up to a year full of new possibilities.
CONSULT A SPIRITUAL ADVISOR
Getting a reading from a psychic or spiritual advisor is a great way to welcome the new year. Who doesn’t want a sneak peek into what may lie ahead with a New Year’s reading?
If the past year has let you down, you may want to ask your consultant what lessons you should take from these experiences. If you’re focused on self-improvement, a consultant may be able to advise you on how best to prepare for the new year.
Like any reading, a New Year’s reading is best done once you’ve cleared your negative energies and are prepared to embrace possibility and change. However, if you’re struggling to let go, some advisors can offer spiritual cleansing and healing.
SET GOALS
Once you reflect on the past year and let go of any negative energy, it’s time to look forward to the year ahead and set your goals.
The idea of New Year’s resolutions can be daunting. That’s why it’s crucial to set goals that are realistic for you and your lifestyle. Make them small and attainable. Want to start a gym routine? Don’t tell yourself you’ve got to go on a daily basis right off the bat. Start with two or three days a week instead. Accept that you may slip up along the way but don’t get discouraged. Just because you didn’t make it to the gym this week, doesn’t mean you should stop going altogether!
Whether you’ve got one or two goals, or a whole list, write it down and put it where you’ll see it often. Be sure to include some resolutions that are good for the soul--resolve to love yourself, treat others better, express daily gratitude, or start a meditation routine.
Now you’re ready to fully embrace 2018 and live the year ahead to its fullest!
