How hard is it to be "happy"? To love yourself?
Many people tell me their life stories and I hear the same problem: they are waiting for "happiness".
They're waiting on a wonderful job, a sweet partner, or a pregnancy that just won't come. They've convinced themselves they'll finally be happy once exams are over, they lose the weight, or buy the house. Sound familiar?
Are you waiting until you get what you to let yourself be happy? This usually creates unrealistic expectations for others, which leads to disappointment.
I often ask these people whether they are "happy" themselves, to which they say "no". "How come?" Are you happy with yourself? Do you love yourself?
If you're not happy with who you are, don't expect someone else to change how you feel. Making your situation dependent on others is not the solution. It is important to first find yourself, to love yourself, and to look at your inner child.
Ask yourself what made you happy as a child and what makes you happy now. Where are you now, in life? Are you enjoying your life? Where do you want to go? And how do you get there? What do you have to do to get this?
Make yourself a priority
The only one who really matters in your life is you, so take care of number one. Every morning, look in the mirror and say to yourself, “Good morning, I love you!” Only when you feel good about yourself and really love yourself, you can be "happy". Only then can you radiate positive energy to the universe.
The feeling of happiness comes from within. People you match with will cross your path but you decide how and who you love.
If you don't change inside, changes in your environment won't do much for your sense of happiness. Don't sit around and wait until you have a reason to be happy in the future. You deserve happiness now. Live in the present moment and be happy with who you are.
Enjoy the little things in life
Happiness has nothing to do with the past or future, but only with the present moment. Focus and concentrate on today and the happiness you can feel now.
Being a happy person you are able to achieve much more. How do you manifest this? How can you just be happy, when you are actually not satisfied with the current situation in your life? The answer is simple: look for the good things.
A good meal with friends or family. A walk in the woods. Playing your favorite sport. Spending time with your pets. Laughter. All the simple pleasures life has to offer.
You can and should enjoy these kinds of things. It's the little things in life that make you grateful and happy. From there you can work towards other goals. You can be poor but still be happy. You can be single or unemployed but still be happy. From this point of view, life can only get better and more beautiful and it is well worth the effort.
Enjoy what you have and stop focusing on what's out of reach. You have to dare to be happy. It is not a destination but a way of life.
